Curator’s Statement
Roads are flowing epics, written with asphalt as paper and traffic as ink, that inscribe Shenzhen's transformation from frontier town to global metropolis, weaving personal stories into a resonating narrative shaped by China’s reform and opening-up.
The year 2025 marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (SEZ), and Shenzhen’s development trajectory constitutes a significant chapter in the history of global urbanization. As the core axis running east-west through the city, Shennan Boulevard serves not only as a critical transportation artery but also as an essential cultural landmark that documents the vicissitudes of the times and carries collective memory. Centered on Shennan Boulevard as its narrative thread, this exhibition examines the dual interaction between geographical space and humanistic sentiment in the process of urbanization through multi-dimensional and multi-media artistic expressions.
The construction and extension of Shennan Boulevard have proceeded in tandem with Shenzhen’s urbanization process. Its evolution from an initial gravel road to a city-spanning transportation artery reflects the epochal characteristics and philosophies that have defined various phases of the SEZ’s development since the launch of the reform and opening-up policy. Lined with Shenzhen’s key political, economic, and cultural facilities on both sides, the avenue has witnessed the city’s dramatic rise and documented the life trajectories of its ordinary citizens. The exhibition seeks to transcend conventional narrative frameworks of urban construction-themed exhibitions. Based on solid documentary compilation, and integrating the Shenzhen Art Museum’s collection, borrowed works, commissioned creations, and open submissions, it constructs a diverse artistic narrative of Shennan Boulevard through four thematic sections—"Memory: Folds of Time", "Urbanity: Dynamic Landscapes", "Performance: Life as Theater", and "Imagination: Hymns to Tomorrow"—approaching the subject from the three perspectives of geopolitics, spatial production, and everyday practice.
At the macro level, the exhibition examines Shennan Boulevard’s function as a structural spine of the city, highlighting its role in shaping Shenzhen’s urban pattern and developmental rhythm. Through urban plans, archival documents, and visual materials, it reconstructs the decision-making processes and social dynamics underlying the road’s planning, thereby interrogating the intricate relationships between infrastructure, state policy, and local governance. By means of painting, documentary photography, and sculpture, artists reinterpret the transformation of iconic architectures and urban landscapes along the avenue—such as Shanghai Hotel, Electronics Building, Shun Hing Square (di wang da sha), and various sections of Shennan Boulevard—offering critical reflections on the mechanisms and consequences of space allocation within modern urban development.
At the micro level, the exhibition highlights the interactive relationship between Shennan Boulevard and its inhabitants, focusing on the interweaving of individual experience and collective memory. Through artworks, historical photographs, and everyday objects associated with urban life, it illuminates the emotional bond forged between citizens and the avenue in the course of their mutual growth. By sound installations, interactive media, and other experiential forms, artists transform scenes such as the fervor of early immigrants, the commercial intensity of Huaqiangbei block, the regeneration of urban villages, and Shennan Boulevard in the age of artificial intelligence into nuanced urban narratives. These works reveal the adaptability, creativity, and resilience of ordinary people.
The participating artists span multiple generations, encompassing not only established and emerging creators across age groups, but also late master artists from 20th-century Guangdong. Among them are long-term practitioners deeply engaged with local culture, as well as young voices active in the contemporary art scene. Their media range from traditional painting and photography to installation, multimedia, and digital art, extending to interdisciplinary practices such as urban planning and urban research proposals. Drawing inspiration from Shennan Boulevard, and grounded in personal memory and social practices, they render an urban portrait imbued with both historical consciousness and futuristic vision.
Shenzhen Art Museum is committed to serving as an observer of urban trends, a preserver of urban memory, and a catalyst for urban innovation. It consistently engages in urban cultural construction and promotes contemporary art through its programs. This exhibition functions both as a retrospective examination of the historical significance of Shennan Boulevard and also as an aesthetic interpretation of Shenzhen’s urban spirit. We hope that through these works, visitors may appreciate the symbiotic growth between a road and a city, sense the courage, vitality, emotions, and further contemplate the possibility of an ongoing dialogue between art, people, and the urban environment within the context of China’s modernization.
